August 1992 wasn’t a good time for the USA because of a horrible hurricane named Andrew. It destroyed almost $26.5 billion worth of US properties. The US government hasn’t incurred this much of a cost because of a natural disaster before. Meanwhile, the administration of Miami Zoo made a wise but uncommon decision to protect the zoo’s flamingos. They decided to keep flamingos in a bathroom during the hurricane.
The Andrew hurricane became a nightmare for the government as well as the people, especially in the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana. At that time, no one could guess how scary it could be. So, the goodwill ambassador and the communication director of Miami Zoo, Ron Magill, wanted to take every possible action to protect the animals in their zoo. That determination made them do something abnormal. They decided to herd flamingos in a bathroom on August 23, 1992. The zookeepers guided a flock of flamingos, which included 38 of them, to a ladies’ washroom at the zoo.
That washroom was actually the best place to protect them from this Category 5 hurricane. The place didn’t have any windows, had easy access to water, and even had tiled surfaces that made it easy to clean afterwards. The administration wanted to lay down a layer of hay on the tiled floor to make it even more comfortable. Even though the flamingos hesitated to move at first, zookeepers still had to herd them for their safety.
After keeping flamingos in a bathroom, Magill had a fantastic idea to capture them because he was indeed a photography enthusiast. He used his point-and-shoot camera to take pictures. Those pictures show how flamingos were gathered together in a corner of the washroom. These “flamingos in a bathroom” pictures lately drew the huge attention of people. Until 2005, the Andrew Hurricane remained the most devastating storm in US history.
